The early inhabitants of the area, called as the “Oxnard Plain” were the Chumash Indians who were known for their fine basket work and plank canoes. Later, explorer Cabrillo came to the Oxnard area. In 1542, he reported to the Queen of Spain and told that the area is the “land of everlasting summer”. Several early Spanish settlers took the benefits of fertile soil. Later, many European immigrants settled in the area and farming became the principle industry. The primary crop was Lima Beans. Sugar beets were also grown in the area. Oxnard Brothers, who were in sugar beet business built a factory of beets. A town was established near the factory to meet the needs of the construction workers, farmers and their families. Several residences and business were built around the factory, called the “Plaza”.
In 1903, Oxnard was incorporated. The name of the city is taken from the Oxnard brothers, the founders of the sugar beet factory. The factory was closed in 1958 when sugar beets were supplanted by vegetables as the primary field crop. During the WWII, Oxnard witnessed significant growth with the foundation of military bases at point Mugu and Port Hueneme. Also, the growth of several manufacturing industries, electronic and aerospace contributed to the growth and development of Oxnard and the neighbouring areas. Today, Oxnard is the largest city in the Ventura County, California.
